2024 Music City Volunteers Sign Up

There are many opportunities to help with 2024 Music City BEST. This year’s game is Low G. The robots will be navigating the moon’s surface to perform exploratory tasks and prepare for future habitation by humans. The 2024 Music City BEST volunteer schedule is:

Project Notebook

Judge

Teams submit an Engineering project notebook that describes how the team designed, built, and tested the robot. It provides evidence of how the Engineering design process was followed and that safe practices were used in construction. The notebook also includes a research paper on the game theme, and it documents the software design process and practices used for creating and testing the robot program. Project notebooks are submitted on Tuesday, November 12. Judges will access them in the BEST Registry and will upload score sheets to the Online Scoring Manager by Friday, November 15

Marketing Presentation

Judge

Teams portray themselves as company employees marketing their robot to a potential buyer. They will discuss their company, Engineering team, brand promise, an understanding of their client’s needs, and why their robot is the best for meeting those needs. Judging is done in 45-minute intervals. Teams present 10-20 mins and have 5 mins for questions. The remaining time is for the judges’ deliberations. Date: Friday, November 15, 6:00-9:00 pm at the Fields Engineering Center, Lipscomb University. Presentations not done on Friday will be on Saturday, November 16, in the Ezell Center. 2-3 judges needed on Saturday morning. Judges access score sheets in the Online Scoring Manager and will upload them by Saturday noon, November 16.

Spirit and Sportsmanship

Judge

Teams will exhibit spirit (vigor and enthusiasm) on Game Day, November 16, using posters, props, tee shirts, cheerleaders, musicians, mascots, costumes, noise-makers, and cheering. Judges will observe the teams’ spirit and sportsmanship throughout the morning. They will look for acts of sportsmanship such as helping other teams in need, grace in winning and losing, and conduct and attitude considered to befitting participation in sports. Judges will move about the arena throughout the morning, observing the teams, visiting their team exhibits, and talking with student team members. After lunch, judges are asked to upload their score sheets into the Online Scoring Manager using laptops that will be provided.

Best Teacher and Best Mentor Awards

Judge

Students will submit nominations for their teachers and/or mentors to be recognized as the best among all the teams. On Game Day, November 16, judges will evaluate these nominations and have an opportunity to talk with students to learn more about those being nominated. Judges will move about the arena throughout the morning talking to students. After lunch, judges are asked to submit their decisions to the Hub Director. These are single first-place awards without score sheets.

Robot Compliance

Judge

Robots are required to adhere to size, weight, material, and construction specifications in order to be eligible to compete. From 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Game Day, November 16, judges will examine the robots to ensure they are complying with all game rules.

Skills Challenges

Judge

Three skills challenges competitions will be offered: Website, Engineering Drawings, and Team Video. Entries must be submitted by Tuesday, November 12. Judges will access the entries in the BEST Registry and upload score sheets into the Online Scoring Manager by Friday, November 15.

Team Check-In

Crew

On Game Day, November 16, robot competition matches will run from 11:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m., with a 90-minute lunch break. Each team checks in during the match prior to their scheduled match. To ensure a smooth flow throughout the day, a Team Check-In Crew will verify that teams are ready to enter the game field at the beginning of each match.

BEST has a powerful impact on the hundreds of young people participating in our annual competition. More than seventy-five volunteers are needed to execute this program effectively and give these students the desired experience. For the ambitious, you can volunteer for work done in the days before Game Day AND help on Game Day as well. Thank you for considering this opportunity with Music City BEST.
